Hornshaw and Fowler provide the details. A former pupil and the son of a Master at the school, he had moved to St Helens and was working in a branch of Williams Deacon Bank there before enlisting. An athlete, he was the regiment's PT instructor: making contact with the Lincolnshires near St Quentin, he was wounded and had to be left due to heavy machine gun fire.
