Hornshaw and Fowler add the detail. After leaving the school, he worked the London and North West Railway. At first he failed to enlist in the infantry due to poor eyesight, finally being accepted in 1916. He died after being hit by a shell splinter whilst acting as a Lewis gunner in the Armentieres sector.
