The memorial commemorates airmen who 'lost their life over Thorney' (i.e. implying they crashed). Whilst the inscription groups the casualties by 'crew', it merely records their year of death; i.e. it does not state which nation's air force they were in/ what rank they held; nor does it actually specify the cause of the crash (i.e. whether due to mid-air collision/ instrument malfunction/ weather etc)
