Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He joined the Navy aged 18 and had served in several ships including HMS Minotaur during the Boxer Rebellion and on HMS Glory in the Arctic supporting the Russians: he was serving on HMS Queen when war was declared. He drowned when his leave ship, HMS Louvain, was torpedoed in the Mediterranean and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval memorial. His brother, Leonard, is also commemorated on this memorial but although he lived on the same street, Dewsbury Street, as James of the same surname who is also commemorated on this memorial, Hornshaw and Fowler could find no evidence they were related.
