Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra detail. The younger brother of Fred, also commemorated on this memorial, he was a Territorial and so was called up in August 1914, leaving his job in the making-up department of a dyeworks. He died in the Lancashire Farms sector of Ypres whilst cooking food: a memorial service was held for him on August 8th and he is also commemorated on the Menin Gate. Death date was given in the press as both July 31st and August 1st: CWGC states the former.
