Hull Daily Mail - Monday 16 October 1933 (page 5) reported:
'ASSOCIATIONS FOR PEACE. Jewish ex-Servicemen in Hull. Nearly a hundred members of the Hull Jewish ex-Servicemen's Association assembled in the Beth Hamedrash, Osborne-street, yesterday afternoon, for the consecration of a banner presented by Mr Benn Franks, in memory of his son, the late Second-Lieutenant Lionel Franks, who died at Rouen, in May, 1917, following war wounds. The service, conducted by the Rev David Hirsch, B.A. (president of the association) preceded a re-union tea, and among the company were: Captain A. Schottlander, T.D., Mr C. E. Harris, Mr A. C. R. Harris, Mr H. Harris (hon. treasurer), Mr H. Rosen (hon. secretary), and Mr J. S. Singleton, Commander G. Griffiths, M.V.C., and Mr D. Q. Ramsdale (who attended as the representatives of the Hull branch of the British Legion). After Mr Franks had formally handed over the banner, the Rev Hirsch spoke of the donor's deep and practical interest in communal institutions, and Captain Schottlander, proposing a vote of thanks to Mr Franks, observed that the banner would be brought into use for the first time on the occasion of the Jewish ex-Servicemen's rally in London on November 5, when it was expected that the Hull contingent would comprise about 100 members. GUARANTEE OF PEACE. Mr C. E. Harris, who is the honorary secretary of the Hull branch of the British Legion, said he hoped they would look upon the new banner as a rallying point. "These ex-Servicemen's associations of ours," he continued, "are not militarist bodies. We know more than anyone else something of the hell of the last war, and we, more than anyone else, can visualise the far greater hell of any future war. No single ex-Serviceman could possibly desire another war, and these associations are much more a guarantee of peace than they are of war." Mr Franks responded. Commander Griffiths (who deputised for Lieut.-Colonel James Walker, D.S.O., J.P.), who was unable to attend, made an appeal for membership to the British Legion, and emphasised that some of the finest experts on pensions matters were connected with the Hull branch, and could be consulted at the local headquarters in Beverley-Road. Proposing thanks to the chairman, A. C. R. Harris urged that the Hull association should be well represented at the London rally, and in this way show that they were loyal to the flag which had been good enough to give them protection. In 1914, went on Mr Harris, the Jewish population of the British Isles was 280,000. and 80,000 of this number joined the forces. Mr Rapstone briefly responded'.
