Derbyshire Advertiser and Journal - Friday 27 July 1860 (page 5) reported:
'ASHBOURN. DEATH OF CAPTAIN HOLLAND, R.N With unfeigned sorrow we have this week to record the demise of Captain Holland, R.N., of Ashbourn Hall, in this county. The melancholy event took place on Saturday last, in London, where he had arrived, on his road homewards. The death of Captain Holland is a loss of no common kind, and will be long and severely felt, not only in the large circle of his surviving relatives, but by the entire community amongst whom the closing years of his comparatively brief but honourable life have been passed. The deceased gentleman came into possession, by purchase, of Ashbourn Hall - the former seat of the Boothbys - in 1852, and with his family shortly afterwards took up his residence there. Determined “to live for the place in which he lived,” he at once identified himself with every social, religious, and political movement which he believed was calculated to promote the well-being of his fellow-townsmen and neighbours, and that with an earnestness of purpose which was one of the most distinguishing features in his character, enabling him to overcome difficulties and opposition which to a less resolute mind would have been insurmountable. For the working classes Captain Holland cherished a peculiar sympathy, and to his thoughtful care and energy Ashbourn owes the rise and progress of a very useful instrumentality specially designed for their benefit: we allude to the Working Men’s Association, in the formation and establishment of which he cheerfully sacrificed time and money, and made many valuable contributions from his well-stored mind. To the same feeling may be traced his espousal of the popular cause in the wider field of general politics, in the advocacy of which, at the last contested election for the county, he took the warmest interest. He was a graceful and eloquent speaker, and his manly and spirited address in introducing the successful candidate to his brother electors at Ashbourn will not soon be forgotten, even by those who differed from him in political opinion. Captain Holland took a lively interest in the movement, and it is not too much to say that the satisfactory position, if not the origin, of the Dove Valley Corps, is due to his exertions, and the loss sustained by that gallant body in the death of their Ensign and Adjutant will be deeply felt by every member of it. Those who were present at the demonstration made by the corps in St. John's Hall, on the 10th of April, will remember the touching allusions he made to the “high aspirations with which he entered the naval service - aspirations destined, in the order of Divine Providence, never to be fulfilled; and the still more affecting reference to his enfeebled state of health - the worst apprehensions in regard to which are now realised. As a magistrate for the county, Captain Holland took an active part at Quarter Sessions and on the Bench, and in the discharge of his official duties was strictly impartial and fearless. He was also one of the Visiting Justices. We must not omit to add that he did not disdain the useful but honourable vocation of a Sunday school teacher, and in many other ways promoted the cause of Christianity and philanthropy. The lamented gentleman, whose untimely death we deplore, was married to the fourth daughter of the late Lord Denman, who survives him, and by whom he leaves a numerous family. "He brought down my strength in my journey, and shortened my days."—Ps. cii., v. 23. The interment took place on Wednesday last, at Ashbourn Church, the burial service being most impressively read by the Vicar, the Rev. J. R. Errington. There was a large concourse of spectators, and as a mark of esteem for the memory of the deceased, the shutters of the shops and private houses in the town were closed during the mournful ceremony'.

Army and Navy Gazette - Saturday 28 July 1860 (page 17), included the following two notices: The Deaths column announced: 'HOLLAND - At the Victoria Hotel, Euston Square, Captain Frederick Holland, R.N., of Ashbourne Hall, Derbyshire, aged 45.
The Obituary column announced: 'Army and Navy Gazette - Saturday 28 July 1860 (page 17) announced: ''Commander Frederick Holland (1846), on reserved half-pay, died on the 21st inst. By the death of Commander Holland, Commander John Barnes (1847) is advanced to the half-pay of 10s. per diem'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001394/18600728/061/0017
Derby Mercury - Wednesday 01 August 1860 (page 5) reported:
'ASHBORNE. CAPTAIN HOLLAND's FUNERAL. Capt. Frederick Holland, R.N., whose death we recorded last week, was buried on Wednesday last, in Ashborne Churchyard, at a quarter past ten o'clock in the morning. A general testimony of respect for the deceased was shown by the partial closing of all the shops for the day, and a total shutting up of some of them during the ceremony of interment; and in addition an immense crowd assembled at the funeral. It is felt that a man of extensive usefulness has departed, and the general question is "Who will take care of the institutions he founded now he is gone?" As the late Captain Holland had desired his funeral to be as private as possible, the wish of the Rifle Corps to attend the procession, and do the accustomed honour to the deceased could not be complied with. We are informed that the infant daughter of the Hon. Mrs. Holland was buried in the same coffin as her father. Lord Denman, the Hon. Captain Denman, brothers-in-law of the deceased, and Captain Holland's brother, attended the burial'.

Derbyshire Advertiser and Journal - Friday 17 August 1860 (page 5) reported: ' A Lecture on Rifle Volunteers and Rifle Shooting, by Captain Hans Busk, is promised for the 17th of September. We have to thank Mr, Hall, the untiring secretary of the Literary Institute, for securing the services of Captain Busk, whose engagements, as may be supposed, are extremely numerous. ‘The chair will be taken by H. C. Okeover, Esq., captain of the Dove Valley rifles, and the profits arising from the lecture are to be devoted to a most desirable object, namely, that of a memorial window in Ashbourn church, to the late Captain Holland. R.N'.

Staffordshire Advertiser - Saturday 25 August 1860 (page 4) reported: 'The erection of a public fountain has been suggested as a memorial to the late Captain Holland; but it appears to have been at last definitely determined that a memorial window, to be placed in Ashbourn Church, shall be erected for the purpose'.
