Notes
The memorial states he attended the school in 1896-1900 and the school website (see References) adds: 'Lieutenant Edward Stanley Ashcroft, of the 17th Battalion The King’s (Liverpool Regiment), was the second son, born in 1882, and died of wounds while a prisoner of war on May 12th 1918. Edward entered Birkenhead School in 1896 and left in 1900. He was also a School Prefect, Captain of the Rugby XV and member of the Cricket XI. Following School, he went in to business in Liverpool. He played rugby for Birkenhead Park and Cheshire, and was also called upon to play for the North of England. Edward was also very committed to the work of the School Mission and spent much of his spare time devoted to the interests of young people. He realised more than most the value and duty of service, and he lived up to the highest ideals which he set himself. His loss was a severe one to the community.'
