Notes
The school website (see References) gives this biographical information: 'John was born on the 10th of March 1922, the son of Mr and Mrs Sidney Bacon of Kenton, Middlesex. He was at Downside, Barlow House, from January 1936 until December 1939.He was commissioned into the Rifle Brigade on the 13th of September 1941 and was posted to the 7th Battalion in February 1943 when they were fighting in Tunisia. His Commanding Officer reported that he became an extremely keen and efficient officer who was intensely loyal towards and popular with his men. By an extreme piece of bad luck, he was killed by a stray shell burst in his first action at Wadi Akarit in Tunisia. He had earlier that month celebrated his 21st birthday. Bacon has no known grave, but he is commemorated on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial in Tunisia.'
