Notes
The school website (see References) provides the extra service, name and death details and provides this brief biographical detail: 'Eustace Gudgeon was born in Hampshire in 1888. He enlisted in the 2nd Wessex (Howitzer) Brigade of the RFA in 1915, and was awarded the Military Cross in January 1918. He died of wounds in April. The citation reads: ““For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in bringing a heavy trench mortar into action. The position was continually under heavy shell fire for several days. He
worked untiringly, and succeeded in engaging and wrecking the enemy’s works on the day before the attack. He contributed largely to the success of the operations by putting enemy strong points and machine gun emplacements out of action.” His elder brother Athole (St Edmund’s College, Ware 1894-99) was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy and went down with HMS Ettrick. Cemetery: St Souplet.'
