The school website (see References) provides this biography: 'Norman Charles Welch was born on 16 July 1865 in Herne Hill, Surrey, the 14th child of John Davis Welch and Maria Louise Vyse. He was at Charterhouse [Verites] 1879-1881. He joined the Hampshire Regiment in 1886 and served in the Burmese War in 1887, in West Africa 1897-1898 before fighting in the Boer War. He was promoted to the rank of Major in 1899. He was wounded near Bothaville on 6 November and died from his wounds on 10 November 1900.'
