Notes
The school website (see References) provides this biography: 'John MacNish Porter (known as Jack) was born on 30 August 1875, the only child of William MacNish Porter and Frances Minna Elizabeth Langley. He was at Charterhouse [Weekites] 1890-1892, where he was a member of the Choir and played first cornet in the School Band. After leaving Charterhouse, he joined his father’s business in London before enlisting as a soldier in the Royal Scots Greys, showing a talent for training horses and quickly gaining promotion to Corporal. On the outbreak for the Boer War he volunteered for active service and was posted to the Remount Establishment at De Aar Junction. He rejoined the Scots Greys in June 1900 and was due to receive a commission as Second Lieutenant, but was sadly killed in action before receiving it. He died on 16 October 1900 at Erinelo.'
