The school website (see References) provides this biography: 'Francis Walter Galpin was born 12 March 1866, the fourth son of Thomas Dixon Galpin, a publisher. He was at Charterhouse between 1879 and 1884; he was a Monitor and played for the Saunderites House football team. After leaving school, he went up to Balliol College, Oxford. He volunteered for service in the Imperial Yeomanry during the Second Anglo Boer War. He died on active service at Lindley on 28 May 1900.'
