The Bristol Grammar School website provides his service and death details and this biographical information: 'Son of James Phillips, house furnisher, and Sarah A Phillips, of 189 Redland Road. Younger brother of Archibald Douglas, Ethel, Edward, Crofton, and Stanley Wansborough.
Phillips was born on 05/08/1896, and attended the School from 1908-1909. He served as a Bombardier in the Army, with the Royal Field Artillery 2nd Gloucester Bty. 3rd/1st South Midland Bde.. Phillips sadly lost his life on 30/10/1915, as a result of the War.
Phillips is buried in Hebuterne Military Cemetery, France, reference I. N. 22.
The school Chronicle (December 1915) wrote "Bombadier J.M.P. Philiips was serving with the 2nd Gloucester Battery of the R.F.A., and was with his captain at the Observatory Station when a shell bursting very near wounded him fatally. The captain who was with him wrote: 'He was a favourite with us all, and so cheerful and such a bright boy. I am sure I personally shall miss him greatly. I am very sorry to have to write such a letter, but you will have the consolation of knowing that he died a hero's death.' Many will remember him at School, his frank open face, his affectionate disposition, and the promise of good sportsmanship and good fellowship which he showed; it is sad that the youngest are paying most of the cost."'
