Notes
All additional information and this short biography are supplied thanks to the research of the Blackpool Grammar School Old Boys: 'He is probably the best documented “old boy” to be commemorated on the memorial. He was the son of EA Hill Mitchelson and Teressa Mason of Osborne Road, Squires Gate. He came to the school from Arnold School in 1923 and left in 1930. Records show that he went into marine engineering after school, before joining the RAF, and reached the rank of Squadron Leader (No 40734) in No 94 Squadron, flying a variety of single-seat fighters. He died on Sunday 15th February 1942, aged 28, whilst flying in a Curtiss Kittyhawk Mk 1 aircraft in North Africa in an engagement at around 1800 hours. He was shot down along with two of his comrades near Bardia when attacked by a Messerschmitt of 4/JG27 flown by Otto Schulz to become his 44th victim (for which Schulz received the Knights Cross from Kesselring at a special ceremony) Squadron Leader Mason is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial in Egypt.' Squadron Leader Mason was credited with at least 15 victories of his own.
