Notes
The extra information comes from materials provided by the College Archivist and other biographical sources (see References and Additional Information). From this the following biographical details are gathered. He was the year younger brother of Barnard, also listed on this memorial, and, like his brother, the son of Reverend Prince William Thomas Beechey, Curate of Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire, where the boys were born (in Charles' case on 27th April 1878). He came up to John's in 1897, read Maths like his brother, and, again like his brother, became a teacher at school's in Framlington, Southport, Warwick and Stamford. The College website also notes: 'Reading the Roll of Honour reveals the personal stories of the Johnians who died, like the Beechey brothers. Charles and Barnard Beechey both attended St John’s in the late 1890s and studied Mathematics. Soon after the outbreak of war Barnard, the eldest of the two brothers, joined the Army and died shortly afterwards in France. Following in his brother’s footsteps Charles also joined the army, and served in East Africa. On his death in 1917 The Eagle reported “Besides these two, three other brothers have died for their country, and a sixth one has been crippled for life; a terrible toll for one family”.'
