Memorial Details
What type of memorial is it?
How would you describe the memorial and its ornamentation?
A stained glass window of eighteen lights - six large, and twelve in the upper traceries, all within stone surrounds.
The central light depicts Christ on the cross, with a hovering angel at each side. In the light to the left is St Michael, with his warrior armour and a set of scales, to weigh the souls of the departed, whilst to the right is St Gabriel, robed in vestments and bearing the lily of purity. Around the figures are grape vines, whilst above each there is a coronet with a white rose on each side.
The lowest set of lights depict three warrior Saints - Joan, George, and Oswald. St Joan, Patron Saint of France, despite having led the French to victory over the English, is perhaps depicted because Capt, Hall was killed in France. She is shown with lilies by her sides, and roses beside her head, with fleurs-de-lys each side of the coronet over her head. St George, patron Saint of England, is shown treading the dragon underfoot, and has roses beside his head, with oak leaves lower down, and white roses each side of the coronet over his head. St Oswald, a popular Saint in Lancashire, is shown in kingly armour, with drawn sword. Behind him is the cross, signifying his death as a Christian King, whilst he too has roses about his body, and oak leaves each side of the coronet over his head.
Acanthus leaves, a symbol of enduring life, surrounds the six major lights.
Above the six major lights is a row of six lights depicting six angels playing musical instruments, representing the joy of heaven. Above each of the angels there is a tiny light showing a masonic symbol.
The uppermost level has, as the central lights, two angels, with masonic symbols above. To their left is depicted the coat of arms of Manchester Grammar School, which the Captain attended from 1905-1910. To their right is depicted the badge of the Manchester Regiment. Further masonic symbols occupy the lights at the side of the tracery.
There is an inscription across the bottom of the window.
