Memorial Details
What type of memorial is it?
How would you describe the memorial and its ornamentation?
A three-light stained glass window in the North wall of the sanctuary of the War Memorial Chapel in the church (WMR 18682). The upper section of the centre light depicts the crucified Christ enthroned in Heaven. Beneath his figure is a coffin on a catafalque draped in the Union flag, with three lighted candles each side.
The upper section of the left-hand light depicts Our Lady with her left hand raised in supplication to Christ, and her right hand gesturing to three kneeling figures, representing a soldier, a sailor and an airman, depicted below. A vested angel Gabriel holding three lilies, the symbol of Mary, stands behind Our Lady.
The upper section of the right-hand light depicts St George in full armour and a red cloak kneeling before the Christ figure, with a vested and armoured figure of St Michael, with sword and spear, behind. Beneath them a Benedictine monk raises the chalice as he celebrates Requiem Mass, with kneeling altar boys behind him, carrying out their duties of ringing the communion bell and raising his chasuble prior to his genuflecting.
A biblical text on a scroll separates the pup and lower sections of the three lights, while another scroll at the bottom of the windows carries the Dedication.
Vine leaves and grapes decorate the outer edges of the two side lights.
