Reading Mercury - Saturday 03 December 1881 (page 1) announced:

Reading Mercury - Saturday 22 July 1882 (page 5) printed the following notice:
'THE MEMORIAL TO THE BERKSHIRE REGIMENT. To the EDITOR of the READING MERCURY. Sir, —Will you be so good as to insert in your Paper of the 22nd, for the information of the 2nd Berkshire Regiment, and that of the subscribers to the Memorials to the gallant men who fell at Maiwand, that the window designed by Messrs. Clayton and Bell will be placed in St. Mary's Church, Reading, on Saturday, July 22nd. The subject of the window is Joshua meeting the Lord of Hosts." At one time it was hoped that a special service would have taken place to unveil the window, but, owing to circumstances, that was not possible. The window is, therefore, put up without any especial service to the honoured memory of those to whom it is placed. The Monument to be erected in the Forbury is progressing satisfactorily, and the model submitted to the Committee by Mr. George Simonds has been highly approved of. I am, Sir, Yours faithfully, PAUL HUNTER, Chairman of Memorial Committee. Mortimer Hill, July 19th, 1882'.

Reading Mercury - Saturday 29 July 1882 (page 5) reported:
'The Memorial to the Berkshire Regiment On Saturday last the memorial window to the memory of the officers and men of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment who fell in the Afghan campaign, was placed in St. Mary's Church in this town. It had been hoped that a special service would have been held to unveil the window, but this was rendered impossible owing to the 1st Battalion of the Berkshire Regiment (49th) being ordered to Egypt; and it was therefore put up without any special service, although the church parade of the Reading Volunteers (reported elsewhere) on the following day was very appropriately arranged. The window, which is one of the most perfect specimens of mural fine art work that we have ever seen, has been designed and executed by Messrs. Clayton and Bell. The beauty of drawing and subtle harmony of colour irresistibly remind one of the fine specimens of mediaeval glass painting still to be seen in some of our cathedrals and other old ecclesiastical edifices. The subject of the window is "Joshua meeting the Lord of Hosts," as narrated in the concluding verses of the 5th chapter of the Book of Joshua. The window is a three-light one; the Lord of Hosts is finely depicted in the central light, His attendant angels filling the right-hand light, and Joshua and some of his captains the left; behind the figures being the walls Jericho, which were to fall on the morrow. The tracery above the three panels is filled with stained glass, the chief feature in it being the badge of the 66th Regiment, held and supported by angels. Below are the following words : "As Captain of the Host of the Lord am I now come;" and "To the glory of God and to the honoured memory of 11 officers and 317 non-commissioned officers and men of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment who fell during the campaign in Southern Afghanistan in 1879 and 1880." It is a coincidence that the anniversary of the battle of Maiwand, when nearly all the men commemorated by this window lost their lives, was on Thursday last'.
