Memorial Details
What type of memorial is it?
How would you describe the memorial and its ornamentation?
A three-light stained glass window with figure depicted in each light and the dedicatory inscription transcribed along the base of each light.

The left light depicts the Virgin Mary with a halo standing barefoot on grass with a canopy above her. Above her left shoulder are lilies and her head is draped with a scarf. A three-arched tomb canopy is below her with a shield with the IHS monogram on it. In the bottom right of the window is an angel which holds one end of the scroll on which the inscription is written.

The centre light depicts Christ on the cross below a canopy. At the foot of the cross are two large nails with a third piercing the head of a serpent. The serpent has a crown of 'nails' on its head. Trees with red fruit are in the background and above them are clouds and a red sunset. Below Christ is an eloborate tomb canopy with a lamb and a banner of victory.

The right light depicts St John the Evangelist with halo standing barefoot, beneath a canopy, on a brown and grey stone ground with daisies above his right foot. An olive tree and red Christmas roses are in the background. Below him is a tomb canopy and a shield with the monogram on it. In the bottom right hand corner is an angel holding the other end of the scroll with the inscription on it.

The canopy above the Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist is formed by flying buttreses, croquetted pinnacles, two quatrefoil-headed arches and a four-centred arch around a pendant. The canopy above Jesus Christ is formed of triple croquetted pinnacles, a cinquefoiled and cusped central arch surmounted by a painted and stained crown with seven white starburst ornaments on a blue background and an additional croquetted and cusped cinquefoil arch

Additional Notes
Supervisor comments
The window was erected by the Rector in memory of his son, Lt Gardner, and was also dedicated as the village memorial to the war dead. Apparently there were no other war casualties from the village.

The rector's wife, Mrs Gardner, is said to have modelled for the face of St John the Evangelist.
