Memorial Details
What type of memorial is it?
How would you describe the memorial and its ornamentation?
A set of two windows, each of two lights. Together, the windows depicted St George, St Alban, St Edward and St Oswald, surmounted with the arms of England and Ireland. The windows were installed as a memorial to parishioners of the St George's RC Cathedral Southwark who died in the First World War. The lights depicting St Edward and St Oswald were destroyed when the cathedral was severely damaged by an incendiary bomb on the night of 16th April 1941. However, the representations of St George and St Alban were salvaged and reset in plain glass. It is believed that there are no photographs in existence of the windows in their original state.

History
Additional Notes
Additional general notes on the memorial
This record was originally entitled 'Irish Bravery' and was described as a lost set of WW1 commemorative emblematic windows, no description or other details known, unveiled by the Mayor of Southwark on 26th June 1921, as reported in the South London Press of 1st July 1921. Information received from the Archives of St.George's Cathedral in July 2024 has revealed that this was a set of four windows of which two survive, plus other details now set out in the amended record, plus a further contemporary reference, i.e. the 2nd July 1921 edition of The Tablet. Regarding the record title, this appears to have been a misunderstanding of the South London Press article: this had a heading "Tribute to Irish Bravery", but this was a reference to part of the sermon preached by Monsignor Brown at the unveiling rather than to the memorial itself. The article in the Tablet also refers to this aspect of the sermon, stating that Monsignor Brown referred to "the part that Catholics, mostly Munsters, led by a heroic priest, had played at Gallipoli".
