Memorial Details
What type of memorial is it?
How would you describe the memorial and its ornamentation?
Three stained glass windows installed in the South wall of the church, with a brass dedication plaque on the sloping cill beneath the centre window. A framed sheet between the centre and right-hand window carries an extensive description of the windows.
The window on the left depicts St George with the St George pennant flying from his lance, with angels holding a St George's cross shield above, with emblems relating to the family, England, and Scotland decorating the margins. At the bottom is a scene of British and French troops, urged on by a British officer, coming out of the trenches - the British to attack Mauntauban, the French Hardecourt. A scroll to the left bears the legend '7.30 am The First of July 1916'. The centre window depicts a resplendent angel holding aloft the Crown of Life, above a scroll carrying the Biblical text 'Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a Crown of Life.' Beneath this is depicted the Lamb and Flag on an altar with a golden chalice, in front of which kneel two angels, and under which are depicted four martyred saints - St Stephen, St Andrew, St Alban, and St George. In the right-hand window is depicted St Joan of Arc in full armour, beneath two angels holding the Arms of France. Beneath her figure she is depicted leading the charge of French troops against the besieging English at Orleans.
