Hornshaw and Fowler provide the details. He was living in Halifax, working in a mill and playing football for Halifax Corinthians before he enlisted in 1943. A letter to them from his brother James said he trained in Canada as a bomb aimer and was based at Leconfield in East Yorkshire, flying Halifax bombers, when he was lost returning from the raid on Dresden during Operation Thunderclap.
