Notes
The Roll's entry for this man records him as 'Charles Munday' [sic], his Regiment as 'Middlesex', and states that he 'Died from exposure on way home'; however, it omits any further details, such as his home address, rank and place/date of death etc. (He is known to have actually been the Charles Henry Mundey who had lived at Crown Street in Peterborough before the War, and who died on 2/3/1919 in Islington).
[CWGC's webpage for this man currently misrecords him as "Private C E Mundey", but rightly records that he died on 2/3/1919, having originally served in the Middlesex Regiment under regimental number GS/599, and later in the Labour Corps under regimental number 444370. He is buried in grave Q.1.4143 at Islington Cemetery and Crematorium in Middlesex. (CWGC's original Graves Registration Form correctly recorded him as "C.H. Mundey"; however, their webpage currently misrecords his second initial, as does their Headstone record for him).
The true name of the man listed on this Roll of Honour, and who who died on 2/3/1919 and is buried at Islington, was Charles Henry Mundey. He was recorded as such in the Medal Rolls, which are annotated that he went to France on 31/5/1915 as Private 599 in the Middlesex Regiment, and that he died as Private 444370 in the Labour Corps on 2/3/1919. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that Charles Henry Mundey, regimental number 444370, died on 2/3/1919 at 1 South Street in Islington, and that his widow Elsie R Mundey was his legatee. His death was registered in Islington District in 1919 as "Charles H Mundey", aged 24. The marriage of Charles Henry Mundey to Elsie Rose Morgan on 5/11/1916 was recorded in the register of Islington Parish Church; Charles gave his age as 22, his occupation as soldier, his address as Fort Horsted Camp in Chatham, and his father's name as Ernest Percy Mundey, deceased Chief Petty Officer of the Royal Navy. On the 1911 census Charles had been living with his father Ernest at 1 Crown Street, New England in Peterborough; Charles' place of birth was given as Portsmouth. On the 1901 census he had been recorded as "Charlie", living with his parents Ernest and Catherine in Plumstead, London. His birth had been registered as Charles Henry Mundey in 1894 in the Portsea Island District in Hampshire. As records confirm that his forenames were Charles Henry, CWGC have now been requested to consider amending their records and his headstone accordingly].
(N.B. The Roll is known to include numerous errors, including: misspelt names and inaccurate date/place of death, service number/ rank/ military unit etc; several casualties were mistakenly listed on it twice [i.e. under their true name and also the alias under which they served]; several other men were listed on it due to the mistaken belief they had died, whereas they had actually survived).
