Born North Shields on 31 January 1886, the only son of the Revd Robert Morrison Herdman and Mary Herdman (of Ripon), he was educated at Trent College in Derbyshire. At Corpus he achieved a 3rd class degree in Modern History in 1909, briefly worked as a marine underwriter at Lloyds but then became a regular soldier and so was called up on 4 August 1914.
