James was born in Newry, Co. Down, on 6 January 1893, the 1st son of James Clarke Stokoe, a surgeon dentist, and educated at Manchester Grammar School (1906-1912) before winning a Scholarship to Corpus to read Classics. He achieved a First in his Moderations in 1914 but never completed his degree for, as a member of the University Contingent of the Officers’ Training Corps, he was called up on 25 March 1915. He died later that year.
