Born Bromley, Kent, on 2 May 1892, the only son of Henry Manuel Read, a banker in London, Harry was educated at Marlborough College, Wiltshire (1906-1911) and then Corpus where he studied Classics as well as being Secretary of Owlets and then its President. However, he did not finish his degree, enlisting on 25 November 1914 into the Lincolnshire Yeomanry, before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps.
