Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was not married and had been educated at the Crossley and Porter School in Halifax before he signed up as a Regular, serving for 8 years between 1891 and 1899 in Gibraltar, Malta and South Africa. He was called up again in 1899 but died of enteric fever on the outward journey aboard the SS Servia on 16 November 1899, and so was buried at sea. He is also commemorated on IWM 2599.
