On 21 January 1940, U-22 sank British destroyer HMS Exmouth; her crew of 135 were all lost, including Chief Stoker Stanley Fleming Graves (1902-1940) of Endmoor, just south of Oxenholme in the parish of Preston Patrick. (The wreck of Exmouth was discovered in the Moray Firth in July 2001).
