Notes
The Roll lists his address as 184 Star Road. It incorrectly states that he died serving in the Royal Engineers under regimental number 77015; he was actually serving in the Durham Light Infantry under that number. (He was strangely omitted from the 1994 version of the Roll of Honour).
CWGC records that Sapper John Pyle, regimental number 77015, died aged 32 on 27/5/1918 serving in 1st/7th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry, and is commemorated on Stone 29A of Soissons Memorial in France. They record him as the son of John and Sarah Pyle of Albert Place, Peterborough, and the husband of M M Pyle of 184 Star Road, Peterborough; they also note that his son Arthur John Pyle fell in the 1939-45 War.
Soldiers Died in the Great War records that John Robert Pyle as a native of Peterborough, and that he had formerly served in the Royal Engineers. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that the widow of "Robert Pyle", Maud M Pyle, was his legatee. The Medal Rolls record him as "Robert Pyle".
(On the 1911 census he was recorded as John R Pyle, aged 25, living with his parents John and Sarah at 23 Albert Place, Peterborough; his place of birth was given as Peterborough, where his birth was registered in 1885. His Army service file records him as "Robert Pyle", and that he was living at 184 Star Road, Peterborough when he enlisted on 20/12/1916 in the Royal Engineers under regimental number 170604. The file records that he had married Maud May Brown on 29/10/1911 at Peterborough Register Office. He embarked on 17/9/1917 and was transferred to the Durham Light Infantry on that date. He was posted as missing on 27/5/1918, which was later presumed to be the day he died).
