Notes
The Roll lists his address as 5 New Road, Woodston. N.B. the Roll records him under his legal surname "Whistlecraft"; unfortunately. however, the Army inaccurately recorded his surname as "Whistlecroft", which was therefore the name they passed to the War Graves Commission, and is inscribed on his headstone.
(CWGC records that Private Frederick Whistlecroft, regimental number 40728, died aged 24 on 4/4/1918 serving in 1st Battalion of the Essex Regiment, and is buried in grave IV.H.1 at Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, France. They record him as the son of James A and Elizabeth J Whistlecroft of 5 New Road, Oundle, Northants.
His birth was registered in Peterborough in 1893 as "Frederick Whistlecraft", which was therefore his legal name; his three siblings' births were likewise registered under that spelling of the surname. Frederick was baptised at Helpston Church on 10/10/1893 as the son of James Arthur and Elizabeth Jane Whistlecraft. On the 1901 census he was living with his parents at 228 Walpole Street in Peterborough under that surname; his place of birth was given as Helpston. On the 1911 census his parents were living at 103 Rogers Street in Peterborough; Frederick was not with them on that census.
The Medal Rolls record that Frederick "Whistlecroft" served in the Northamptonshire Regiment under regimental number 26823 before joining the Essex Regiment. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects likewise recorded him as Frederick "Whistlecroft", indicating that he died of wounds in Belgium on 4/4/1918, and that his mother Elizabeth was his legatee).
