Hornshaw and Fowler provide service and death details. Brother of Harry, also commemorated here, bother were orphans and brought up by an Aunt and Uncle. A sportsman (cricket and rugby), he joined up and served with his friend Harry Sutcliffe, also commemorated here: he was killed by sniper fire trying to reach Harry who had gone into No Man's Land to recover wounded. He is also commemorated on the Thiepval memorial. This was the only Calderdale memorial they found him named on but there is a photo of him on page 421 of the online version of Hornshaw and Fowler's work.
