Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was the son of the former pastor of the Bridge End Congregational Church in Brighouse and he had gained a First Class Degree from Oxford before accepting a post at Liverpool University. He enlisted in 1915, was wounded on the Somme in 1916, was awarded the MC for gallantry and devotion to duty in 1917 and was finally killed, despite being operated on both in a casualty clearing station and in hospital, in 1918 after he was hit in the abdomen and both legs. This is his only commemoration on any Calderdale memorial that they researched and his rank is wrongly listed upon it according to them (and CWGC confirm).
