Notes
All extra details are based on information supplied by the College Archivist (see Additional Information). This included the following biographical details: '(1910) Born 16 July 1892, I Salem Hill South, Sunderland, County Durham; son of James Vickerman Kemp, Clerk in Holy Orders, and Mary Royston Nicholson. Subject(s): Classics; BA 1913. Tutor(s): L H K Bushe-Fox. Educ: St John's School, Leatherhead; Westcott House, Cambridge. Career: Private, 19th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers 1915; Second Lieutenant, 4th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry 1916; Acting Captain 1918. Awards: Choral Studentship, SJC. Died 31 May 1918 (died of gas poisoning on active service).' Another biographical source (see References) adds: 'Gas attacks struck down Johnians — one was Percy Kemp in 1918, who read Classics and was a chorister. The fact that he died five days afterwards in hospital gives a hint of the suffering this weapon inflicted on people.' A relative arrived to be with him in hospital two hours after he died.
