Notes
All extra details are based on information supplied by the College Archivist (see Additional Information). This included the following biographical details. He was born on 26th April, 1877, the son of the Reverend Prince William Thomas Beechey who was the Curate at Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire. Barnard came up to John's in 1896 with an Exhibition in Maths and, after graduating, became a teacher in Stamford, Wotton-under-Edge and, finally, Dorchester. The other biographical source provided by the College (see references) states: 'Reading the Roll of Honour reveals the personal stories of the Johnians who died, like the Beechey brothers. Charles and Barnard Beechey both attended St John’s in the late 1890s and studied Mathematics. Soon after the outbreak of war Barnard, the eldest of the two brothers, joined the Army and died shortly afterwards in France. Following in his brother’s footsteps Charles also joined the army, and served in East Africa. On his death in 1917 The Eagle reported “Besides these two, three other brothers have died for their country, and a sixth one has been crippled for life; a terrible toll for one family”.' The CWGC provide his exact death date and location: he is listed on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
