Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler found only 1 F Holgate in Calderdale, named Fred. However, using the Brighouse Echo of 17th May 1918 as their source, they have him serving with the South Staffordshires: CWGC lists 5 F Holgates, including this one in the South Staffs. The confusion over his regiment aside, if they are correct Hornshaw and Fowler say he worked for a woolstaplers before he enlisted in November 1916. He was married to Edith, had a Mother who lived in Toronto and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. However, as we cannot be certain no details have been added here.
