He was married to Eveline Nellie and they had 4 children: he had worked as a tailor for 21 years before he enlisted in January 1915, initially into the artillery before tranfserrinjg. He died on the first day of the Somme attempting to capture the Hawthorn Redoubt mine crater. He is also commemorated on IWM 2689.
