Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide service and death details. A regular soldier for 19 years, serving in India and the Boer War, he re-enlisted in January 1915. Frequently ill and suffering from rheumatism, he was employed at the school of Artillery in Shoeburyness. Taken ill whilst on leave visiting his terminally ill wife, he first reported to the St Luke's Military Hospital in Halifax, was told to report back to Shoeburyness but collapsed at home and was then admitted to St Luke's but then discharged. He then went to the sick bay at Wellesley Barracks in Halifax where he stayed for 2 months, his wife dying in the meantime. Eventually St Luke's admitted him but he died 5 days later and is buried in nearby Heptonstall churchyard.
