drowned when a lifeboat capsized from HMT Manitou after it had been challenged by a Turkish ship and they were made to abandon ship as it was going to be sunk en route to Gallipoli. The Turks were not successful in sinking the ship but 60 lives were lost. The Manitou continued its War Service.
