Notes
On this 1994 version of the Roll of Honour, 'W. F. Taylor' is listed as being of St Peter's College, and states that he died serving in the East Kents (attached to the Lincolnshire Regiment). It inaccurately records his date of death as 17/6/1915.
(CWGC records that Lieutenant William Frederick Taylor died on 7/6/1915, serving in the 3rd Battalion East Kent Regiment (The Buffs)., and is buried in grave III.A.13 at Perth Cemetery (China Wall) in Belgium. They record him as the 'Son of William and Marian Taylor, of "Harrow," Stephenson Rd., Cowes, Isle of Wight'. Soldiers Died in the Great War likewise records his date of death as 7/6/1915. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record him as having died on 8/6/1915, and that his father William Taylor was his legatee.
When the original version of the Peterborough Roll of Honour was in the process of being drawn up in 1921, its compiler initially included an entry on it for W F Taylor; however, his entry was crossed off/voided on the finished version of that Roll, on the basis that Taylor had never in fact actually lived or worked in Peterborough. On 19/6/1915 the Peterborough Advertiser had announced Taylor's death, stating he had been appointed as Science tutor at St Peter's College in July 1914 but, due to the outbreak of the War, had not actually taken up post. The compiler of the 1921 version of the Roll therefore deemed it inappropriate to include him as a 'Peterborough casualty'. St Peter's College similarly omitted Taylor from their own WW1 Memorial, presumably for the same reason, i.e. that he never actually lived/worked there. When the 1994 version of the Roll was drawn up, its compiler opted to include an entry for Taylor).
