Notes
The Roll lists his address as Priestgate; it omits the date and nature of his death.

(The Roll of Honour entry arose from the report that had been printed on 19/5/1917 in the Peterborough Advertiser, announcing that: "Private A Phillips, Royal Fusiliers, died of wounds in head and chest on April 18th in France. He was the son of Mr & Mrs E J Phillips, late of Peterborough, and was at one time employed at the Peterborough Infirmary".
The only "A Phillips" of any Regiment recorded in CWGC's WW1 casualty registers as having died on 18/4/1917 was Private A Phillips, regimental number E/2196, who died on 18/4/1917 serving in the 17th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, and is buried in grave I.A.13 at H.A.C. Cemetery in Ecoust St Mein, France. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that Private Alfred Phillips, regimental number 2196, was a native of Kensington, where he enlisted, and that he was killed in action. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that his mother Mary Ann was his legatee. The Medal Rolls record that he was a Private in the 17th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (regimental number E/2196) attached to 252 Tunneling Company of the Royal Engineers when he was killed in action. The 1911 census records that Alfred Phillips was aged 15, living with his parents Edward James and Mary Ann Phillips at 90 Cromwell Road in Peterborough, working as a porter at the Infirmary. His place of birth was given on that census as Saltley, Birmingham. On the 1901 census he had been recorded as being aged 6, living with his parents in Bradbury Street, Radcliffe, Lancashire. On that census Alfred's place of birth had likewise been given as Saltley, Birmingham, but two of his elder siblings were stated to have been born in Kensington, which was also his mother's place of birth).
