Notes
This 1994 version of the Roll of Honour mistakenly listed this man twice: once as "Philip Wade" (who it states died in Egypt on 14/4/1917 [sic] as a Private in the Essex Regiment), and again as "Philip Whale" (who it correctly states died in Egypt on 4/4/1917 in the Essex Regiment, but does not record his rank); on both entries, his address is listed as Dogsthorpe Road. The true surname of the man to whom both entries were alluding was in fact "Wale"; he died on 4/4/1917.
Although the two entries relate to the same man, they nonetheless each appear on the Roll, so our transcript of it necessitates a Names record for both. (Our Names record re the rogue entry under "Phillip Wade" is 1053044).
(CWGC records that Private Phillip Wale, regimental number 250778, died aged 23 on 4/4/1917 serving in 1st/5th Battalion of the Essex Regiment, and is buried in grave F.250 at Kantara War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt. They record him as the son of Frederick Wale of The Cottage, Humberstone Drive, Leicester.
Soldiers Died in the Great War records that Phillip Wale was living in Leicester when he enlisted in Peterborough. The Medal Rolls record that his original regimental number in the Essex Regiment was 3270, but later changed to 250778. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that Phillip Wale died on 4/4/1917 at No2 Australian Station Hospital in Egypt, and that his father Frederick was his legatee.
The birth of Phillip Wale was registered in Leicester District in 1893. He was the son of Frederick and Ada Esther Wale, who had been living at 15 Midland Street in Leicester on the 1881 census. Phillip's mother Ada died in 1898; on the 1901 census he was living with his father Frederick and stepmother Fanny at 15 Midland Street in Leicester. His father and step-mother were still at that address in 1911; Phillip's own whereabouts on that census have not been traced).
