Notes
The Roll lists his address as New England. It records him as "Jack Vines", and that he was killed in action on 12/3/1915, neither of which tallies with official records.
(CWGC records that Private Jack Vines, regimental number 9140, died aged 25 on 14/3/1915 serving in D Company of 2nd Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment, and is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial in France. They record him as the son of William Vines of 2 Franks' Cottages, Dogsthorpe, Peterborough.
The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that Jack Vines died between 10th and 14th March 1915, and that his father William was his legatee. The Medal Rolls record that Jack went to France on 6/11/1914, and that he was killed in action on 14/3/1915.
Whilst he evidently served as "Jack Vines" (and all his military documents record him as such), his birth was actually registered in Peterborough District as Bertie John Vines in 1890. Whe he was baptised at St Paul's Church in Peterborough, as the son of William and Elizabeth Vines, his date of birth was noted on the register as 14/12/1890. On the 1891 census he was recorded as "Berty J Vines", living with his parents at 44 New England, Peterborough; his place of birth was given as New England. On the 1901 census he was recorded as Bertie J Vines, living with his widowed father William at 221 GNR Cottages in Peterborough. By the 1911 census "Jack Vines" was serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment at South Raglan Barracks in Devonport).
