(CWGC records that Serjeant Samuel Lorimer Varder, regimental number 7135, died on 26/4/1915 serving in the 1st Battalion of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, and that he is commemorated on Helles Memorial in Turkey.
Samuel Lorimer Varder's birth was registered in Totnes District, Devon in 1882. On the 1891 Scottish census he and his parents Jane and Samuel were staying at Penpont in Dumfries with his grandparents Robert & Margaret Lorimer. On the 1901 census Samuel was a Lance Corporal at the barracks in Berwick on Tweed. On the 1911 census he was a Serjeant in the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers.
His Army service file records that he enlisted as a Private in the 5th Royal Irish Lancers. On 30/4/1900 he applied for a transfer to the King's Own Scottish Borderers and was assigned to their Depot. He was promoted to Corporal on 24/4/1901, and to Sergeant on 25/3/1903; he transferred to the 1st Battalion on 1/4/1903. On 28/1/1905 he was posted to Burma. He joined the 2nd Battalion on 28/2/1905, and transferred to Aden on 3/12/1905. On 29/12/1906 he returned to the UK. On 25/9/1907 he was posted to Egypt, where he rejoined the 1st Battalion on 7/10/1907. On 14/10/1909 he was posted to Sudan. He embarked for Khartoum on 26/10/1909, and later transferred to the East Indies on 5/2/1911. On 11/11/1913 he was promoted to Colour Sergeant, but reverted to Sergeant on 15/9/1914. From 16/11/1914 to 14/12/1914 Samuel was in Egypt. He joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 12/3/1915. Having been reported as missing on 26/4/1915, his death on that date was later presumed. His Army file records that his next of kin was initially his father, but changed following Samuel's marriage to Madge Alice, whose address was recorded as c/o Ivydale, Lincoln Road, New England, Peterborough; she later moved to 33a Bridge Street, Lockerbie, Dumfries. [The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that his widow Madge was his legatee].
On 19/6/1915 the Peterborough Advertiser announced Samuel's death, referring to him as the son of Mr & Mrs Varder of Ivydale in Lincoln Road, Peterborough. The report stated that Samuel had run away from college to enlist to fight in the Boer War. That War had ended three weeks later, thwarting his ambition to participate, but he had remained in the Army. He was reported to have married in India in 1914).
