Notes
The Roll lists him as "J. Throssell", of 165 High Street, Old Fletton. It records that he died on 4/6/1917, which differs from official records. His true forenames were actually "Percy Arthur", but he served as "Jack Arthur Throssell".
(CWGC records that Gunner J. A. Throssell, regimental number 104464, died on 5/6/1917 serving in 118th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery, and is buried in grave I.B.18 at Pont D'Achelles Military Cemetery in Nieppe, France. They record him as the husband of Mrs E. Throssell of 46 High Street, Old Fletton, Peterborough.
His birth was registered as "Percy Arthur Throssell" in the Thrapston District in 1893. On the 1901 census he was recorded as Percy Arthur, living with his parents John and Mary Annie Throssell at Chapel Street, Titchmarsh; his place of birth was recorded on that census as Keyston, Huntingdonshire. On the 1911 census he was recorded as "John Arthur Throssell", native of Keyston, lodging at 192 Gladstone Street, Peterborough; his widowed mother Mary Annie Throssell was living at 37 High Street, Rushden.
When Percy enlisted he did so as "Jack Arthur Throssell"; all his military records are therefore under that name. His Army service file records his regimental number as 104464, and that he was aged 22 years and 9 months and living at 33 King's Road in Oakham when he enlisted on 12/12/1915. His next of kin was his wife Ethel nee Burks, who he was recorded as having married on 14/9/1913 in Old Fletton, Peterborough. (His marriage was registered in the Peterborough District as "Jack Arthur Throssell"). He was mobilized on 17/7/1916 and served in the UK until being sent to France on 9/2/1917. On 5/6/1917 he was wounded and admitted to No 9 Australian Field Hospital, where he died of his wounds the same day. The relatives' form in the Army file records that his father was deceased, his mother Annie Throssell was living at 37 High Street, Rushden, and his widow Ethel was living at 46 High Street, Old Fletton with their daughter Phyllis.
Although his birth was registered as "Percy Arthur Throssell", which was therefore his legal name, in adult life he used the forename "Jack". As he had enlisted as "Jack Arthur Throssell", that was the name the Army passed to the War Graves Commission, and is also why he was recorded in the Peterborough Roll of Honour as "J. Throssell". The announcement of his death in the Northampton Mercury on 22/6/1917 read: "Throssel, Gunner Percy (Jack), R.G.A., son of Mrs Throssel, High Street, Rushden, died of wounds received through the bursting of a shell").
