(CWGC records that Private B. Stocks, regimental number 6819, died on 17/9/1914 serving in 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, and is buried in grave I.A.12 at Vendresse British Cemetery in France. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that "Benjamin Stocks" was a native of Peterborough who enlisted at Northampton. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects recorded that "Benjamin Stocks" was killed in action on 17/9/1914, leaving a Will in favour of Mrs L. Webb, and that his sister Ada Lucy Webb was his legatee. His birth was registered in Peterborough District in 1883 as Ben Stocks, which was therefore his legal name. His baptism as Ben Stocks was recorded in the register of St Mary's Church in Peterborough on 16/12/1883, which stated him to be the son of James and Adah Lucy Stocks of St John's Street. On the 1891 census Ben and his siblings (including Lucy) were living with their widowed mother Ada in St Mary's Street, Peterborough. On the 1901 census Ben was living with his mother and step-father John Seaton at 185 Belsize Avenue, Woodston, Peterborough. On the 1911 census he was living with his mother and step-father at 2 Thatched Cottages, Fengate, Peterborough. Ben's Army service file records that he was aged 19 when he joined the regular Army as "Benjamin Stocks" on 3/1/1903; he was already serving in the 3rd Battalion Northamptonshire Militia at that time. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion Northants Regiment and posted to South Africa on 8/4/1903; he returned to the UK on 27/5/1904. On 17/12/1904 he transferred to the 1st Battalion and was posted to India; he returned to the UK 31/3/1906. He joined the Army Reserve on 2/4/1908. He was later mobilized on 5/8/1914, posted to the 3rd Battalion on 8/8/1914, and on 28/8/1918 was sent to France with the 1st Battalion. He was killed in action at Moulin on 17/9/1914. His Army file records that his next of kin were his mother Ada Seaton and his siblings. His medals were sent to his sister: Mrs A.L. Webb of 55 Bushberry Road, Homerton, London. As he had enlisted as "Benjamin" Stocks, all his Army records are under that name).
