Notes
The Roll lists his address as 53 Silver Street (which also mistakenly listed his brother Richard 'George' Southwell as a casualty). It recorded Lewis' rank as Corporal, his regimental number as 41417, and his date of death as 17/9/1918, all of which differs from official records.

(CWGC records that Private L Southwell, regimental number 31060, died on 18/9/1918 serving in 1st Battalion of The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, and is now buried in grave V.D.6 of Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery in France, having been reinterred after the War. Lewis Southwell's birth was registered in Peterborough District in 1898. On the 1901 and 1911 census he was living with his parents Richard and Emma at 53 Silver Street, Fletton, Peterborough; his place of birth was given as Woodston. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that Private Lewis Southwell died on 18/9/1918 and that his father Richard was his legatee. Lewis was recorded on the Medal Rolls as having only served under the regimental number 31060; the Medal Rolls record him as a Corporal. However, when Lewis' death was announced in the Peterborough Advertiser on 12/10/1918, a letter of sympathy from his Officer was quoted as opening: "Your son, Pte Southwell, was killed in action on September 18th...". (The newspaper reported that Lewis had joined the Army on 29/11/1917, and had gone to France in March 1918).
