(CWGC records that Rifleman J W Sharpe, regimental number 1946, died aged 30 on 18/3/1915 serving in 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, and is buried in grave IV.A.42 at Bethune Town Cemetery in France. They record him as the son of Herbert and Emma Sharpe, and the husband of Rose Pelling (formerly Sharpe) of 72 Preston Road, Brighton. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record him as a Bugler, that he died at Bethune on 18/3/1915 of syncope, and that his widow Rose was his legatee. James William Sharpe was baptised at King's Cliffe Church on 10/4/1887 as the son of Herbert and Emma. On the 1891 census he was living with them at Glatton. On the 1901 census he was a lodger at 2 Sweetings Court in Huntingdon. On the 1911 census he was boarding at 2 Market Row in Gosport with his wife Rose and their 3 children; he gave his occupation as soldier. James' Army service file records that he was a native of King's Cliffe and aged 15 when he enlisted at Colchester on 26/5/1899, stating that he was already a member of the 5th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps; he was appointed as a Bugler. On 9/3/1911 he re-engaged at Woolwich as a Bugler in the KRRC. He was posted to France on 11/8/1914, and was still serving as a Bugler when he died from syncope on 18/3/1915. The Army file records that originally his next of kin were his parents Herbert and Emily Sharpe of St Germaine Street, Huntingdon but, following his marriage to Rose Baines on 30/1/1905, his next of kin became his wife, at 13 St Margaret's Road, Fletton, Peterborough. On the relatives form within the Army file, his widow Rose Pelling gave her address as 182 Lewis Road, Brighton. Rose Sharpe's marriage to William Pelling had been registered in the Farnham District in 1917).
