Notes
The Roll of Honour mistakenly listed this man twice; once as Lance Corporal 'C W B Rippon' of 8 South Street, Stanground, killed in action with the 2nd Northants on 12/8/1916 and 'buried at Vermelles'; and again as Lance Corporal 'William Rippon' of Chapel Yard, Stanground, with the same manner/date of death, same Battalion/Regiment, and likewise buried in Vermelles; the Roll's entry for 'William Rippon' states that his regimental number was 17954.
Both entries actually relate to Charles William Bullimore Rippon, who was killed on that date as Lance Corporal 17954 in the 2nd Northants. On 26/8/1916 the Peterborough Standard announced the death of Lance Corporal 'C.W. Rippon', reporting his widow's address as Chapel Yard, Stanground. (On the 1911 Census his parents John and Eliza were living in South Street, Stanground).
CWGC records that Lance Corporal Charles William Rippon, regimental number 17394, died 12/8/1916 in the 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, and is buried in grave III.N.3 at Vermelles British Cemetery. They record him as
'Eldest son of John and Eliza Rippon, of 8, South St., Stanground, Peterborough'.
Confusion re his forenames/initials and the addresses of his parents and widow evidently caused him to be mistakenly listed twice on the Peterborough Roll of Honour. Even though both entries are on the same page of the Roll (and list identical surname, rank, Battalion/Regiment, date/manner of death, place of burial), they are nonetheless both listed on it, so we need to include a 'Names record' for each entry.
