Notes
The Roll lists his address as 82 Gilpin Street. The Roll actually listed him twice, as he was mistakenly also listed on it as 'Bertie Lands'. Despite the fact that both entries relate to the same man, to avoid the impression that we have overlooked the 'Lands' entry, we have a Names record for him under that surname too.
(CWGC records that Pioneer Bertie Rands, regimental number 128674, died aged 22 on 23/9/1918 serving in the Royal Engineers, and is buried in grave 6.2.517 at Broadway Cemetery in Peterborough. They record him as the son of William Rands of 82 Gilpin Street, New England. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that Bertie was a native of Peterborough, that he served only in the UK, and that he was serving at the Special Brigade Depot when he died. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that he was serving at the Royal Engineers Transport Company's Special Base Depot when he died at Boscombe Military Hospital on 23/9/1918 as the result of gas poisoning from a shell; his mother Elizabeth was his legatee. Bertie's death was registered in the Christchurch District in Hampshire. His birth had been registered in Peterborough District in 1896. On the 1911 census he was living with his parents William and Elizabeth Rands at 82 Gilpin Street, Peterborough; he was their only surviving child).
